LIWONDE NATIONAL PARK IS THE COUNTRY’S MOST BELOVED GAME VIEWING AREA AND PROVIDES A WELL-ROUNDED WILDLIFE EXPERIENCE. THE SHIRE ADDS TO ITS CHARM AS THE RIVER BREATHES LIFE AND ENERGY INTO THE PARK’S WESTERN BOUNDARY.

It is here where hippos and huge crocodiles prefer to spend their time, the latter often stalking prey from within thick reed beds. Hyenas, lions and leopards are the enemies of bushbuck, kudu, sable and other antelope. Hundreds of elephants also roam the park. The varied birdlife is astonishing with favourites such as the African fish eagle, goliath heron, saddle-billed stork and pied kingfisher making appearances. Pel’s fishing owl, the palm-nut vulture and red-necked falcon are some of the rarer gems to look out for. A boat safari is a must while early morning bush walks and night drives with friendly and knowledgeable guides are incredible as well. When it comes to flora, spectacular baobab trees and poetic fever trees complement the dominating mopane woodland admired for their 12-metre high canopy.
