THE UNDERRATED TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK IN NORTHWEST TANZANIA IS ONE OF AFRICA’S LARGER NATIONAL PARKS. WHILE ZEBRAS, WILDEBEESTS, CAPE BUFFALO AND OTHER COMMON PLAINS GAME SPECIES CAN BE FOUND HERE, IT IS MAINLY FAMED FOR ITS ELEPHANT POPULATION, SOMETIMES UP TO 300 IN ONE HERD.
Also present but harder to spot are the local tree-climbing lions. The concentration of game is fantastic during the winter when the river after which the park is named runs through it, becoming the main water source. During the dry season, one may even witness elephants digging in the sandy river beds in search of underground streams. Walking in the footsteps of wildlife accompanied by expert field guides is a Tarangire highlight.
