It is not only easier to hike as it is less muddy, but there is a lower risk of malaria infection. However, for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park, the rainy seasons (mid-February to early June and mid-September to mid-December) are ideal as these primates are easier to find then.
Whatever the season, a reasonable level of fitness is required for trekking.

While showers in the rainforest cannot be avoided, bright sunshine often follows. September to November and March to May make up the wet seasons during which some roads are impassable.
This lush country is also a premier birding destination and home to several stunning reserves such as the Queen Elizabeth National Park, a stunning savannah reserve.
