THE WELL-KNOWN AND MUCH VISITED AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK SITS IN THE SOUTH, AT THE NORTHERN BASE OF KILIMANJARO NEAR KENYA/TANZANIA BORDER. THE PARK IS PARTICULARLY RENOWNED FOR ITS HIGH DENSITY OF ELEPHANTS, COMPLEMENTED BY A HEALTHY POPULATION OF BUFFALO, CHEETAH, GIRAFFE, IMPALA, HYENA, LION, WILDEBEEST AND ZEBRA.
The snow-capped peak of Africa’s tallest mountain makes quite the backdrop for photographers hoping to capture the plains game roaming the scenic savannahs below. In the dry months, harsh habitats ensure great wildlife experiences before being replaced by lush, life-giving landscapes during the rainy season. With more than 400 species of the winged variety recorded, Amboseli is also a spectacular place for birding. Bustards, cranes, eagles, falcons, goshawks and harriers can all be seen as well as bee-eaters. Waterbirds are particularly prevalent while others such as the lesser kestrel, lesser flamingo and Madagascar pond-heron are endangered.
