The memory of observing them in their glorious, protected habitats is priceless and incomparable.

Uganda is a country with varied landscapes where dense forests not only envelop mountains, waterfalls and lakes but remarkable wildlife as well.

It has the highest concentration of primates on earth and the very rare mountain gorilla is one of these species. Gorilla tracking is an extraordinary expedition in this exotic part of the world.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protects an estimated 400 mountain gorillas, about half of the world’s remaining population. The park is part of the ancient, biodiverse forest it derives its name from.

The forest is an enchanting ecosystem deep in the heart of central Africa that occupies a small corner of southwestern Uganda. Naturalist guides and trackers accompany those who wish to go gorilla trekking in this remote part of the country.

Deep within the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest there is a remote and atmospheric retreat by the name of Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, the only accommodation located within the national park.

Rwanda may be small but the primate tracking opportunities it offers are some of the best on the planet. Northwestern Rwanda, with its dense forests and magical mountains, is renowned for gorilla trekking and Volcanoes National Park is the place to do it.

This unrivalled attraction is destined for determined adventurers as the terrain is tough to traverse. Families of habituated mountain gorillas share the park with primates, birds and butterflies. There are various walks, hikes and trekking tours to choose from.

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, built and operated by Governors’ Camp Collection, is Rwanda’s first-ever community-owned lodge. It is adjacent to Volcanoes National Park from where clients start trekking on foot. The renowned Virunga Lodge nearby is the premier luxury gorilla lodge of Rwanda with stunning views of the Virunga Volcanoes, Musanze valley as well as Lakes Burera and Ruhondo.

These mystical, mountainous tropical countries are both intimidating and alluring; challenging to explore but boasting wonderful scenes as reward. The best time to visit is between June and September or between December and February. Hand-picked accommodation contributes greatly to a deeply enriching safari in these friendly destinations.
