AN OUTSTANDING RESERVE IS TUCKED AWAY IN SOUTH-EASTERN ZAMBIA ON THE NORTHERN BANK OF THE IMPRESSIVE ZAMBEZI RIVER. IT IS THE LOWER ZAMBEZI NATIONAL PARK, AN UNTAMED AND RELATIVELY UNDEVELOPED PLACE, MAJESTICALLY BORDERED BY AN ARRESTING ESCARPMENT IN THE NORTH.

The park’s distinguishing feature and greatest attribute is the mighty Zambezi River, the fourth longest in Africa. This meandering mass is a natural magnet for wildlife that are drawn to its welcoming banks, especially during drier months, making it the best area for gaming viewing. Across the border, sharing the splendour of the river, is Mana Pools Reserve in Zimbabwe.

Together, the parks create a rather substantial wildlife sanctuary cocooned by mountains, with the concentration of game mainly on the valley floor. Brilliant birdlife, massive herds of elephant, buffalo and waterbuck are drawn to the water where sightings of hippopotamus and crocodile are common. Descent populations of lion along with leopard and hyena also roam the park that has no shortage of prey. Tiger fishing is a very popular pastime that continues to attract ambitious anglers. For the more adventurous explorers, short- or multi-day canoe and boat safaris are exceptional ways to quietly observe wildlife from the river, accompanied by experienced guides.
